Mary Katheryn Pinney, 40, returned to her heavenly father on March 11, 2018 when a tree struck her tent during an unexpected storm on a family camping trip.
Mary was born to Dr. Jim Zaruba, D.C. and Margie Zaruba on June 10, 1977 in Baytown, Texas. She graduated from Lee High School in Baytown, where she was Company Major for the Brigadiers - the school's all-girl drum and bugle corps. With a clear vision of her path in life, Mary flew through college earning her doctorate at age 22 from Texas Chiropractic College. She also served as the graduating class president. Thereafter, she joined her father serving Baytown and the surrounding communities as a Chiropractor for more than 18 years. During that time, she earned a Diplomat of Nutrition, taught as an adjunct professor at Lee College, and wrote a children's book called Pennies from Heaven. Mary was immersed in the community and served in many organizations throughout the years. This included Kiwanis, YMCA, Blue Santa, Communities in Schools, and Parkgate Community Church. But, her love was the time she devoted to Project Blue, a police charity formed by the family in memory of her brother. With Mary at the helm, the charity was able to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for sick and injured police officers throughout the state of Texas. With Project Blue, she also presided as the race director for Baytown's annual Jail Break Run Half Marathon.
Mary was also blessed with a large and loving family. She married her best friend Marc Pinney on November 19, 2011 in Baytown, Texas. Together they adopted three beautiful children. Mary's proudest title was that of mother. She arranged her life so that the children would never see a day care. Mary was an avid traveler having visited all 50 states with her parents. She aspired to give her children the same experience and in only two years was able to bring the kids to 6 different states. From the very beginning, she dedicated her children to God and encouraged them to explore His word.
Mary was a gifted leader. She was kind and thoughtful, never missing the opportunity to show her love for her family and friends. She enjoyed taking the initiative to ensure that every birthday, anniversary, baby shower, and special occasion was as memorable as possible. She is dearly missed by her loved ones, who celebrate the fact that she is at peace with her creator.
Mary is survived by her husband Marc; her children Molly, Meekah, and Michael; her parents Jim and Margie; her brother Jim Zaruba and wife Sarah Zaruba; her nieces Karyssa Zaruba and Ashlyn Hall; and her nephews Ethan and Ryan Hall. She was preceded in death by her brother Marcus Lee Zaruba and her grandparents Jim and Cassie Zaruba, and Luther and Mary Miller.
A funeral service is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, 2018, at Rollingbrook Fellowship (First Baptist Church) located at 505 Rollingbrook, Baytown, Texas 77521, with Dr. Jim Fiertag officiating.
