Obituary

Sammie Garland “Sam” Hughes, 76, of Beach City passed away peacefully Saturday, March 10, 2018, with his loving wife and family by his side. Sam was born August 15, 1941, to Samuel and Frances Elizabeth Hughes in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Sam was a 1962 graduate of Virginia Tech with a Civil Engineering degree. He then joined the U. S. Army in 1963 as a Second Lieutenant, serving in Vietnam from 1965-1966. Sam left the Army as a Captain and went into sales, eventually moving to Baytown, where he opened a mobile home sales lot.

Sam was serving as a deacon at Second Baptist Church in Baytown when he was asked to be the interim pastor for Fisher Road Baptist Church “until they could find someone”. That was in 1995 and he served 22 faithful years at the church, until August of 2017, when he resigned because he had received the diagnosis of brain cancer.

Sam devoted himself to his family, his church and its people and service to the Lord. He served as Chaplin for the Beach City VFD. In 2009 Sam was named Beach City Volunteer of the year. He also served on the Board of Directors of Love Network. Sam was always supportive of the community he loved and was always doing for others.

One of Sam’s favorite scriptures was James 1:2-4. “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” Sam faced his terminal diagnosis with faith, a gentle spirit and continued to show his love for others until he ascended to meet Jesus in Glory. The legacy he left his family and friends is an awesome example of the man he was. He will be forever loved, missed and remembered as a great husband, father, Pa-paw and friend who never lost his faith and sense of humor.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James Lucian Hughes; uncles, Henry and Barry Hughes; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Thomas Fisher and Beatrice Odom; and sister-in-law, Barbara Odom Allen. He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Scharlotte Odom Hughes; sons, Lee Hughes of Baytown, Charles Hughes and wife Renee of Florida, Lt. Col. John Hall, U. S. Army (Retired) and wife Jenny of California, William Yancy Hall and wife Angela of California, and Chris Stamper and wife Jessica of Florida; daughter, Renee Hall Smith and husband Jimmy of Webster; grandchildren, Diana Calles Rodriguez and husband Richard of Baytown, Daniel Calles and wife Megan DelaRosa of California, Sgt. David Calles, U. S. Marine Corps of Okinawa, Japan, Austin and Tyler Hughes of Florida, Cheyanne Hughes of Baytown, Zachary and Mason Hall of California, Evan, Emily, Landon and Lawson Hall of California, and Elissa, Dylan, Garret and Matthew Stamper of Florida; great grandchildren, Isabella Marie Garcia and Samuel J. Rodriguez of Baytown and Daniel Antonio Calles, Jr. and Mia Beatrice Calles of California; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Sharon Hughes of Virginia, Denise Odom and Victor Boiles of League City, and Glen Odom and wife Suzanne of Baytown; much loved first cousin, Patricia McCord and husband Clyde of Virginia; and an extended family of nieces and nephews and their families.

His family will greet friends at Navarre Funeral Home on Saturday, March 17, 2018, beginning at 1:00 p.m. with a memorial service celebrating Sam’s life to follow at 2:00 p.m. with his nephew Rodney Evans and Shane Perez, pastor of Fisher Road Baptist Church, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests remembrances in memory of Sam Hughes be made to the building fund at Fisher Road Baptist Church, 8610 Fisher Rd., Baytown, TX 77523.

We have a special appreciation for Chris Hays, MD and Tejal Shah, MD, along with a special thank you to caregivers, Kathy and Christal, who were so loving, gentle and encouraging.
