Our precious mother and Mamaw, Hazel Christine Cooper Smith, "flew away to glory" on Friday, April 28, 2017, at the young age of 97 years.
Born to Dee and Ora Cooper on January 21, 1920, in Council Grove, MS, Hazel was the only daughter of 4 children.
She was a hard-working country girl who became a Christian at an early age, and a registered nurse at the age of 21. She delighted in being able to serve both God and others. Hazel served in the Women's Auxiliary Corps during WWII, where she met and married her husband, Hosea, in 1943.
In 1949, they moved to Highlands, TX, and, later, Baytown, living in the
Baytown area for over 60 years.
In 1964, Hazel began working at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Baytown and worked there until 2000, when she retired at age 80. Mom had a loving spirit and a great sense of humor. We loved her so much and we'll miss her "until we meet again!"
Hazel's parents, brothers, husband Hosea, and children, Karen Cooper and David Smith, preceded her in death.
She is survived by daughters Wanda Little (Les) of Broken Arrow, OK, and Frances Howey (Frank) of Springfield, MO, 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Her love, kindness, inspiration, and humor will live on in us all.
Her family will receive friends at Navarre Funeral Home Tuesday, May 2, 2017, from 11:00 a.m. until 12 Noon. A private graveside service will follow.
